Hosted alongside Carnegie Mellon University, the AI Adoption Initiative convened policymakers, researchers, educators, workforce practitioners, and industry leaders from around the world for a two-day workshop, AI Upskilling: The Future of Work in the Age of AI.

Panels, discussions, and breakout rooms throughout the workshop were structured from the AI Adoption Initiative and Carnegie Mellon University’s pre-read policy paper, The AI Labor Stack: Rethinking the Workforce from the Ground Up. The paper introduced three layers of the AI labor stack: the innovators who build the infrastructure, the facilitators who deploy and integrate the technology, and the users whose jobs will ultimately be changed by applying AI.

Following interest in the critical role of facilitators to advancing adoption, the AI Adoption Initiative and Carnegie Mellon University released the report Mapping the Missing Middle in the AI Workforce: Facilitators and Their Role in AI Adoption. The report develops a taxonomy of the facilitators who bridge AI capability and economy-wide adoption, examining the social, technical and infrastructural roles needed to enable AI diffusion and inform workforce and adoption policy.
